We can never be entirely original, as artists or as people. The genius and vision of those who came before us is too great for us to digress from entirely. Though, as creatures that are compelled to test and surpass our own creative abilities, we must always strive for that originality in everything we do in order to move the world forward. Jessica Lave
About This Quote

When an author, musician, or artist is credited with originality, they are most often referring to the idea of having a new idea. This idea may have been inspired by something that came before the author, but the author took it in a new direction. People are often afraid of being too derivative when they are trying to create something new. When they hear news that some writer has won an award for their original work, they are often dismayed because they believe they can never create anything original in their lifetime.

It is in this way that they are being judged in their attempts. When I read this quote in school it made me feel better about myself and my creative abilities because I realized I wasn’t doing anything original. If I was successful I would be playing someone else’s music and writing someone else’s stories (which isn’t completely true since I get ideas from many places but not many get published).
